A Million Dollar Lesson in Persistence

It's a wonderful day in the literary life of Michele Glance Rooney! One of my favorite clients received their first book offer today for a first-time novel. As anyone who has been around the block a few times in the publishing world knows, attaining a contract for a first-time novel is an awesome achievement -- one that should be heralded with the popping of champagne corks and the sending of lavish bouquets of long-stemmed roses. It's a victory for me as an agent, but a much greater victory for my wonderful client.
One of the most gratifying things about this sale though, is the role that persistence, dedication and sheer hard work played in it. This was not a slam dunk sale. I did a lot of hand-holding with this author. I endured the sting of rejection from some very prestigous New York publishing houses. But did I give up? No, I prevailed. And therein lies the essential difference between victory and defeat.
When the going gets tough, the tough get going. I am going to look up that famous quote from Calvin Coolidge on persistence and e-mail it all of my fiction clients today. It's a lesson worth holding in one's heart.
